Applications electronics

Numerous options for dispensing head, dispensing valves and software control make the dispenseALL420 the perfect SMT dispensing system in electronics production. Especially in the production of circuit carriers, the dispensing machine impresses with its precision. With the highest positioning accuracy, the system dispenses even the smallest quantities of the medium with high repeatability and long-term stability.

Dispensing of solder pastes

If no stencil is available for paste printing during the development phase or in special applications, then the dispensing of solder paste with a dispenser offers a flexible and precise alternative.

For the application of solder paste different dispensing valves are suitable:

  • Time-pressure dispenser valve
With its simple design, the time-pressure dispenser valve offers a cost advantage in standard layouts or power electronics.

  • Precision dispenser valve
The high-precision processor control of this dispensing valve allows highest dispensing accuracy for circuits with fine pitch or components with small pitches.

  • Jet-Dispensing system
A jet valve offers the highest dispensing speed with stable paste quantity. Suitable for solder paste, glue and similar media.

Advantages of dispensing solder pastes

  • Fast and flexible production of prototypes and small series.
  • Cost-effective alternative to stencil production during the development phase of circuits.
  • Short reaction times for layout changes.
  • Selective dispensing is possible, also as a supplement to existing stencil printing.
  • Dispensing of 3D-MIDs or on different height levels.
  • Dispensing in cavities and holes.

Dispensing of SMD glues

Although the use cases decrease, the bonding of components in the SMT production remains indispensable. The advantages of the mounting method are particularly evident in heavy-duty designs such as power components or connectors. Gluing ensures the mechanical stability of the circuit. For smaller components, mechanical forces can be better derived. For example, SMD bonding is used in portable circuits in consumer electronics or control electronics in automotive applications.

Various dosing valves are suitable for dispensing SMD glues:

  • Time-pressure dispenser valve
Glue dots usually have a grid or a volume for which a time-pressure valve is ideally suited.

  • Precision dispenser valve
Especially in machines that dispense several media such as glue and solder paste at the same time, the use of Precision dispenser valves is ideal.

  • Jet Dispensing system
A jet valve offers the highest dispensing speed with stable paste quantity. Suitable for solder paste, glue and similar media.

Advantages of dispensing SMD-glues:

  • Fast and flexible production of prototypes and small series.
  • Cost-effective alternative to stencil production during the development phase of circuits.
  • Short reaction times for layout changes.
  • Selective dispensing is possible, also as a supplement to existing stencil printing.
  • Dispensing of 3D-MIDs or on different height levels.
  • Dispensing in cavities and holes.

Dispensing of silver conductive pastes

Silver conductive pastes always offer an alternative to conventional solder pastes when circuit carriers or components are sensitive to high temperatures and therefore standard soldering processes are not suitable.

The main application example is the production of membrane keyboards. Support material is often polyester or polycarbonate. The temperature resistance of these plastics is far below the melting point of solder paste. For this reason, silver conductive pastes are used to integrate LEDs for signal displays.

Silver conductive pastes are much more expensive compared to solder pastes. They require more care in handling and storage. Therefore, the precision dispenser valve is recommended for dispensing.

Various dispensing valves are suitable for dispensing silver conductive paste:

  • Precision dispenser valve
  • Jet-Dispensing system
  • Screw dispenser valve

Dispensing of Underfill

Elastic, temperature-resistant plastics are used as underfill in SMT mounting, for example, BGAs and flip chips. The underfill securely connects the chip to the line carriers and compensates for the different temperature expansions of the chip and the substrate. Underfill mounting significantly increases reliability and service life.

Various dispensing valves are suitable for dispensing underfill:

  • Time-pressure valve
  • Precision dispenser valve
  • Jet-Dispensing system
  • Screw dispenser valve

In order to further optimize the underfill process, it is optionally possible to integrate media tempering or substrate heating into the dispensing system.

If the used medium is low-viscosity, a suck-back option is recommended. Negative pressure keeps the medium during dispensing intervals in the dispensing valve, dripping is prevented.

Dispensing in potting

Potting protects assemblies and performers against environmental influences such as moisture, corrosion or vibrations. The lifetime is increased. The component is mounted in a housing and then potted with a suitable medium for each requirement. The potting method is used above all for high-volume packages such as encapsulated coils or for applications in power electronics.

FRITSCH SMT offers with the dispenseALL420 ideal solutions for potting processes. For example, different media can be shed in one or more passes.

Depending on the medium, various valves are suitable for potting / casting:

  • Time-pressure dispenser valve
  • Precision dispenser valve
  • Jet Dispensing system
  • Screw dispenser valve

Optionally, media tempering, substrate heating or a back-up vacuum (suck back) can be integrated into the system.

Dispensing in Dam and Fill

The dam and fill process uses two different media. First, a dam is placed around the component to be protected with a high-viscosity medium. Subsequently, the area within the dam is filled with a low viscosity medium until the circuit is completely covered. The dispensing machine dispenseALL420 allows processing of up to four different media simultaneously.

Depending on the medium, different valves are available for dispensing with Dam and Fill:

  • Time-pressure dispenser valve
  • Precision dispenser valve
  • Screw dispenser valve
  • Jet Dispensing system

Dispensing with Conformal Coating / Protective Coating

Protective coatings make circuit boards more stable against external influences. They ensure functionality and increase the life of the circuits. When dispensing protective coatings, different methods are used, depending on the medium used.

For dispensing of protective coatings, different dispensing valves come into question:

  • Spray valve
Low to medium viscosity media can be applied evenly by spraying with a spray valve. In Conformal Coating this is the commonest used valve.

  • Time-pressure dispenser valve
Thanks to its robust construction, the time-pressure dispenser valve offers cost advantages.

  • Precision dispenser valve
The high-precision control of the precision dispenser valve allows highest dispensing accuracy with the smallest media quantities.

  • Jet-Dispensing system
The jet dispensing system offers the highest dispensing speed with stable media volume.

  • Screw dispenser valve
The rotating and pressure-tight displacement system in the screw dispenser valve allows a high degree of repeat accuracy, even with very small quantities.
